Life’s a Beach: Grand Re-opening of the CCC Cheaha Lake House on May 19
Cheaha State Park is hosting a “mountain style beach party” to celebrate the opening of its historic CCC Lake House on Saturday, May 19, 2018, from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Highlights of the event include an optional CCC interpretive hike with Park Naturalist, Mandy Pearson, from the mountaintop to the lake, a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:00 am, a CCC heritage talk, a Fairy House eco-architecture adventure for kids, a live animal presentation, an old-fashioned horseshoe tournament, hammocking, fishing, swimming, hiking, live music by Justin Farr, grilled hotdog lunches ($), and more! Drinks and merchandise will be sold in the Lake House Store and Museum.
“Our vision is to revive the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Lake House to its former glory. It pleases us to remind park visitors of the park’s unique heritage. I am very passionate about history in general, but CCC has a special place in my heart. There is still much to do; we will continue refurbishment as funding becomes available,” says Park Manager, Callie Thornton.
“Cheaha State Park has the exceptional honor of being the oldest continuously operating state park in Alabama, which was made possible by the dedicated service of CCC Co 465, 468, and 2420. Through their hard work and dedication, we can provide a wonderful summer escape to our park guests,” states Mandy Pearson, Park Naturalist. Renee Raney, Park Supervisor, believes that Cheaha State Park is filled with stories: some known and others yet untold. “If only these rocks, beams, and doorways could talk to us we would stand in awe of all that they have seen and heard,” she says. “With each improvement and with every project implemented in this park, we recover another chapter to its story: an incredible tale that encompasses one of the most successful conservation projects in America’s heritage and still thrives today.”
